Hey class,
Really great thinking and debating today! I've definitely got a great group of students and I'm excited about the year ahead.
Your homework for Wednesday is straightforward--taking detailed notes on the first half hour or so of the History Channel's documentary, The Dark Ages. However, getting set up might be a bit tricky. So here are your instructions.
First, by now you should have received an email inviting you to join the class Google Group. This is simply a mailing list that allows me to contact you all at once. Once you've joined the group, you don't need to think about it again. You should shortly thereafter have received a link to the course Google Drive folder. This folder, on the other hand, you will use all year to submit work to me. You need to go into the "Submitted Student Work" folder and create a sub-folder using your full name. This is where you will submit work to me.
Please be reminded that I only accept work via Google Drive or your Course Blog (more on the blog on Wednesday). I also only accept Google Documents files (no Word, PDFs, or Pages, please!). This is so I can more easily give you detailed feedback and so as to avoid wasting time continually saving and searching through folders for files. The only exception to this is when your are submitting a physical product like a poster or something like that.
Second, you will need to set up a Video Notes account and link it to Google Drive. Video Notes is a cool and super easy way to take notes while watching online videos. It automatically time-stamps your notes so you know precisely where in the video your note relates to for future reference.
To set this up, go to www.videonot.es and click "Connect with Google Drive." If this works, great! However, at PAS we have security barriers which sometimes limit our usage of Google Drive. If this is the case, I will have to get tech support to fix it. In the meantime, try connecting via your personal Google Account. If you do not have one, you can still use Video Notes on its own. You will just have to save the files into your Google Drive folder (see above) rather than "moving" the files. If even that goes wrong, please take notes using Google Docs instead.
Third, you will need to click on the following link to Youtube, "History Channel The Dark Ages 1 of 10." You are responsible for viewing and taking notes on all of Videos 1, 2, and up to minute 3:55 of Video 3. In total, viewing time will be a little over 30 minutes, though probably longer as you pause, type, and play as you take notes. When taking notes, focus on recording the most important and interesting information as opposed to every minor detail.
Fourth, once complete, I think you will probably have three files. If you can somehow convert them into a single file, please do so. If you cannot, that's ok. Please "move" or "upload" the file into your "Submitted Student Work" sub-folder before class on Wednesday.
The videos are very interesting. Enjoy!
